Today I’m sharing a little bit of my knowledge with you – of course only, if you are interested in it. As you may know, watercolors can be a tricky medium. They are wonderful and flow with the right amount of water when using them in paintings. After drying they still can be reactivated with water and mess up the whole painting. I myself have posted many watercolor postcards, that I’ve painted over the years and I always recommend to seal them before sending them to the recipients – without envelopes! Up until now everything went fine and they arrived all fine.

In general there are two ways to seal paintings and I will write a little bit about both of them:

1. Fixative Spray: It is well known among artists, who use acrylic paints and they do work for watercolor paintings as well. The paintings, that were varnished with a fixative spray have a glossy finish, that looks very nice (watch test of Perfect Pencil). But according to Teoh Yi Chie the spray can resolve and destroy linework, if there is any. Many artists use ballpoint pens or liners in their watercolor paintings or sketches and the spay fixative can destroy that.

Tip: Please do not use haisspray as some suggest, because it can get sticky and yellow over time.

2. Wax: That is the sealing medium, that I personally prefer to use. It doesn’t harm the paintings, is very fast to apply and seals the surface of the paintings waterproof. (See picture abote, the right side was treated with wax.) I also show in the video, how I use the wax on test paintings of course. I also have used the wax for years now and have not seen any side effects or harm to the cards and paintings I’ve made. It also is important for me, that the paintings don’t loose their matte look after sealing them.

Was ich nutze:/ What I use:

  • Ranger Distress micro Glaze
  • Gamblin Cold Wax Medium

Was man im Endeffekt benutzt, bleibt jedem selbst überlassen.

What you use in the end is entirely up to you and what look and style you prefer to have on your sealed paintings. If you hand your paintings in frames with glass, you don’t need to seal them at all. But I truly hope, that this tip I gave you is helping you a little bit and that this is the kind of knowledge you may have searched for.

I am very happy to receive your comments with suggestions and corrections and of course alternatives to these two methods, if there are any! I love to learn new stuff and to share it with you of course!

Habt einen kreativen Tag!/ Have a creative day!
