It may seem unnecessary, but I tried to test all my watercolor paints and inks for lightfastness. The nice weather and sun made it a little bit easier for me. All in all the swatches hang on a north faced window (maisonette apartment) and get a lot of light during the day, they will hang there for about three months until September. I do that mainly to know, how lightfast the paints are, that I use and when I paint, I want the results to last as long as possible.

Not all paints and inks are lightfast, that means, that they will fade, vanish over the time or change in hue. Oftentimes it’s the matter of the pigment used for the paint and inks as well as the making process. The differences often lead to drastically different results. The manufacturers don’t always make tests and if they do, the results are not always reliable (but often) and sometimes there are no notes on the lightfastness of the products at all. That’s why I made a test with the art supplies I use. As the test is running for 3 months, there are updates every 3-4 weeks to see how fast several paints and inks are fading. This is the first update now and it is hopefully helpfull to those, who use the same paints as me.

The tests are important, if you want to paint something, that is supposed to hang on your walls, where there is light. Even without direct sunlight, the colors may change, even if it’s not a fast change. You can still use not lightfast paints in sketchbooks and on cards, that aren’t displayed all the time. If you know the qualities of  your paints, you are more concious about using them for certain projects without being surprised by their behaviour afterwards.
