Hello wonderful people,

finally I have completed the tutorial on how to paint on wood. All the steps of the process starting with the preparation, the painting and how finally to seal the painting are now available in two videos as well as in written form in this post.

All products used are only suggestions, so if you already own similar products or have other brands, that are easier available where you live, please use those. The products I used are linked in this post, to link them I used affiliate links were I receive a little provision at no extra cost to you.

Vogel auf Holzscheibe

Let’s start with the tutorial though. The woodslices itself were purchased by me from amazon. I chose the ones with pre drilled holes, to make it easier. But you can of course choose whatever you like to create your art. Same goes for the sizes of your wooden pieces. For the wood slices, that had no hole in them, I used magnets on the back. That was a lot of fun! Now let’s go to the first step:

Biene auf Holzscheibe
  1. That step is important: controll your slices for uneven or rough surfaces and edges and sand them down to create a nice smooth paintable surface on your wooden slices.
  2. The second step might be surprising to you, but it actually helps to create a clean finished product: varnish the piece. For that step I used a clear matte varnish and applied one coat on the side that I want to paint and up to 3 coats to the back side. It catches all the dust and creates a clean piece that is ready to be decorated further.
  3. To create an actually paintable surface, if you use watercolours or gouache, you need to apply a watercolour ground (amazon|Jacksons). This acts as a base layer that reacts slightly different from paper, but makes watercolours usable on most surfaces. Mine is made by Daniel Smith but feel free to use one that is available to you and that suits your style. Watercolour grounds are available in different colours such as transparent, white, black, gold or pearl. I used a cheap brush to coat the wooden slice, because watercolour ground is very difficult to clean from brushes and I wanted to avoid the destruction of one of the nicer brushes.
  4. Now comes the fun step: paint! Watercolour ground as a surface behaves slightly different from paper, but I’m sure you’ll adjust to it quickly. It’s best to prepare several wooden slices to be able to paint several pieces in a row.
  5. Once the image is fully dried it’s time to seal it. There are two options on doing that: First one is a spray fixative (amazon|Jacksons), that should be best used outside due to strong smell. Also you need to apply 3 layers of the spray fixative to fully seal it and make it ready for the next step. The second option is a brush on watercolour varnish (amazon). That one has a strong odor too, but less than the spray fixative. Only one layer is enough to seal the piece, it dries matte. The downside is again that the brush is very difficult to clean – so please use a cheap one. No matter what product you use here, let your piece dry completely for the final steps.
  6. In this step the wooden slice gets varnished again by using an acrylic varnish that can be matte or glossy (amazon|Jacksons) depending on what you like best and what you want to achive with your art. I felt like it was best to use 2 coats. Consider, that it’s better to use glossy varnish when your piece has shimmer or metallic paint on it, because matte varnish would ruin the shiny effect. Let the piece dry completely after each coat.
  7. Final step is adding decorations if you like to your piece, maybe a magnet on the back or a ribbon or twine to be able to hang your precious piece. There are no rules to this and you are free to do whatever suits your style and aesthetics.
Tutorial Teil 2

All in all the process takes a bit of time, but isn’t overly complicated. The testing and trying out of new products was necessary for me to find the best way possible and to find the best products to achieve the results that I wanted. If you find something to optimize that the better!

Have fun creating and make something wonderful!
