Hallo,

Sonnet Lasurtest / Sonnet glazing and lifting test

Was sind so eure Lieblingssets derzeit? Das wäre doch mal spannend zu wissen.

Habt einen kreativen Tag!

Hello,

first I saw it on other channels and blogs, then I found it on amazon and had to order it: the Sonnet set in the beautiful yellow tin palette. A few years ago it was pretty difficult to buy palettes in a different colour than black, now it’s pretty common and that is great.

Sonnet Palette

Nevskaya Palitra, the company that creates the White Nights, does sell their paints in cute colourful tins now. The Sonnets are their student grade paints, while the White Nights are the professionals. Student grade paints are great to try out, to learn and explore. That’s why they have to be decend and to work. After being curious about those paints and creating swatches and collecting samples for the watercolour database (sunandcolors.com) nevertheless, I did order these.

The unboxing and the review you can see in the video.

Sonnet Palette

As a resumé I just can tell, that I really enjoyed the colour selection in this set. It gave me all the colours I needed to play around and you can actually see in the mixing chart that there is a wide variety of mixable colours. Of course all of them can still be adjusted in the process, but I enjoy the overview.

The dispersion test showed, especially with comparisons by QoR, Schmincke and Daniel Smith on the bottom, that the colours indeed move in water, maybe not extremely as other brands, but it’s always depending on the binder, pigments and whether there are fillers in the paints. About the fillers the company admits, that the Sonnets contain more binder and fillers than the White Nights, which is expected of a student grade range.

Sonnet Dispersionstest

Another test I made was the glazing and lifting test. These paints glazed beautifully as many are transparent or semi transparent and only a few are opaque. That also lead to the problem (or advantage) of most of them being staining as they did not lift easily and some did not lift at all. This can be an issue as mistakes can be difficult to correct, but it can be helpful if someone uses a lot of glazing in their art and for underpaintings.

While painting the toucan I did not encounter any problems to be honest and enjoyed the easy process. They felt a lot like their big sister the White Nights, though the company claims to use a different, synthetic binder. Just after the drying process some of them showed a little shine when applied in mass tone. Also many of the colours are not entirely lightfast, but my tests will show, which ones we can trust.

As a beginners set they are really nice and certainly better than some other student grade paints. So if anyone is interested in a set for paintings they don’t want to sell (because poor lightfastness), go for it.

What are your favourite sets right now? i’ve always been curious about this.

Have a creative day!
