Cabochon is a french word for polished shaped gemstones, that are flat on one side. They are very much used to make custom jewelry as earrings, pendants and rings. I was blogging for over ten years now on different platforms. I made a lot of jewelry back then. Mostly earrings, because I love to wear them the most and like them being custom made. I had the tutorial for these published once on an earlier blog of mine and as I made some more earrings, I wanted to share it again here. These are the earrings that I made yesterday.

It’s very easy to make this kind of jewelry and you can do that easily! Of course you can make pendants and rings with this tutorial as well. You need two kinds of glue for that (Glossy Accents and Hasulith), blancks (?) and glass cabochons. For the picture inside you can take anything you like, a photo of a beloved person, patterned paper or even fabric. You can also paint a custom pattern on those. For the upper earrings I used fabric, that I liked, the other pair was decorated with acrylic paint. For years I used this both glues the most for different kinds of jewelry, so I kept doing that here. I know, that I could have used a glue named Stanger Schmuckkleber from a 1€ Shop named Tedi in Germany (ist costs 1€) and has similar qualities as Glossy Accents.

To make the jewelry itself is very easy. You have to put Glossy Accents on the flat side of the cabochon and be careful to leave no air bubbles in the glue. Then put the glue onto the fabric or paper with the picture you would like to have. Be carefull! If you use fabric, put some paper under it, because the glue gets through sometimes – it depends on the fabric, but hey, you wouldn’t want to glue the cabochon onto your desk, would you? Let it dry overnight! For the second pair I used some acrylic paint and dabbed some white dots directly onto the flat side of the cabochon. After it dried, I used some teal paint and covered the whole back of it. I let that dry aswell. It’s very important, that the paint is completely dry. After the cabochons dried, you would have to cut out the cabochon being glued onto the fabric or paper, be carefull to not rip the fabric apart from the cabochon! After you’ve done that, you can add some Hasulith or a different strong glue that dries clear on the blank (still not sure, if that’s the right word for the metal thingie) and spread it evenly with something like a toothpick. Press the cabochons carefully into the glue and let them dry. Hasulith needs at least one day to dry, when you glue metal directly onto glass, it could need even 2 days, to be completely dry. But it stays perfectly in place after!

It’s very simple and fast to make custom jewelry using this method. You can get the earrings and pendant blanks  on amazon. I had mine from a german site similar to etsy, but they are cheaper on amazon. Be sure to check, if you’re not allergic to the metal used. (I’m very carefull about that, because I can’t wear any kind of metal.) Many shops offer even prints or digital layouts ready to be printed and used for that kind of jewelry. I never used those, but like it, when I have custom patterns, that make me happy.
