Hello wonderful people!

Let’s start with part 3 of the super granulating colours by Schmincke review, which were released just recently.

The colours of the set are:

  • Glacier Blue (PB29, PG50)
  • Glacier Turquoise (PG50, PV16)
  • Glacier Green (PR233, PG50)
  • Glacier Brown (PBr6, PG26)
  • Glacier Black (PBk11, PB35)
Schmincke Gletscher Farben

In general I find the fice colours of the set are beautifully, there is a nice variety and possibility to create a painting with this limited palette. But looking closer the Glacier Blue and the Galaxy Blue are very close in colour. It’s because both colours use the same pigments in slightly different ratio. Glacier Blue is more granulating and creates a stronger effect on paper and that’s why I like it better. The Glacier Turquoise contains a violet pigment, which you can barely see. The granulation is also very light in this colour. Glacier Green on the other hand is supergranulating indeed! The Potters Pink (PR233) and Cobalt Turquoise (PG50) in combination create a fantastic effect! While the Turquoise moves through water fast the Potters Pink stays put. This is amazing to see in the background of the painting I created using this set only. This is exactly the effect I expected from colours that call themselves “super granulating” and I want more of that.

Glacier Brown is a nice, deep colour and the pigments are very harmonious in combination. Glacier Black again triggers something in me. It’s a combination of PBk11 Mars Black and PB35 Cobalt Azure, while Mars Black is a nice strong colour the Cobalt Azure is very light tinting and is barely seen in the mix. In the swatches it even appears that the paper shines through and creates the illusion of a warm black colour, which it’s not. In my opinion it could have been a stronger mix or more of the PB35 pigment be mixed in, so the effect would be more visible. Of course another pigment combination could have been chosen too.

As you can see my critique is mostly directed at the colour or pigment combinations created by Schmincke. As usual the paints have high quality and are easy to use.

This time I again think, that the mixes are easily created by mixing colours granulation lovers most likely already have in their palettes. The colours feel like something to play with, which is great, but stay convenience mixes at the same time.

Another video with a even more nerdy review is in the making, where I want to talk about all the colours. I hope to finish it soon, so you don’t have a long time to wait for the overview.

As always this video and post are not sponsored and all paints were purchased and paid by me.

In my watercolour database you can see all colours in detail including the pigment info, properties and soon the results of an independent lightfastness test.

Have an amazing weekend and enjoy the rain (if you have rain… I do enjoy it a lot after the heatwave :))!

Yours Lana
