When I was little, I was fascinated by ancient Egypt. So much so, that I’ve read hundred of books about the myths and archeological finds. Papyrus was the plant based mystical paper that they’ve used. Of course I had a decorative bookmark made from papyrus, that came with one of those books – and I still have that somewhere. So just recently I was on a hunt for new art supplies and inspirations on gerstaecker (not affiliate) I found real papyrus, that was meant to be used with watercolours. Two of my passions combined! Was what I thought and ordered some sheets to try out. There are the results of my test.

The painting experience is so different from what I ever experienced on paper. The papyrus doesn’t soak in the water, that’s why it was important to keep the brush relatively dry. At the same time the colours appeared duller on papyrus, so the pigment load hat to be a little bigger on the brush. The structure, which is close to canvas, is very apparent and you can see lines from where the paint decides to flow a little. I was very impressed that the paints and water would not bleed through the papyrus in the end.

All of this doesn’t harm the painting experience on papyrus at all. It feels adventurous and natural. It’s totally different from paper, but that’s what I wanted to try. In the end, I’m pretty happy to have tried it out and am already planning what to paint next on this wonderful surface. 🙂 (The next one will be a little bigger too!)

If you’re curious to see how the paints behave on papyrus, I have recorded the process, so you can see for yourself. The video is already uploaded on YouTube.

Thanks for reading and have a wonderful and magical day!
